Hafen 2 (meaning ‘harbor 2’) is a wild combination of artistic space, petting zoo, concert hall, café, arthouse cinema, meadow, art studio and house club. Sometimes even more than that: theater, fashion, debates, readings. There is no term of just one word to name it appropriately. For simplicity’s sake we call it “arts center”. Whenever there is time for another title: “interdisciplinary platform”.

We? This is a non-profit association “suesswasser e.V – Kunst und Kultur im Hafen Offenbach” (“Art and Culture in Offenbach’s harbor”). Plus a network of many associated creative minds.

Hafen 2 supports progressive art and culture. Both active participants and recipients are to gain profit and inspiration from this. We would like to further social abilities, to develop the ability to be critical, to enable self-realization, to practice the development of taste, to encourage involvement, to unmask pseudo-desires, to encourage modern life concepts.

Why do we do this? Because we love shaping things. This is what we do best and want most. We simply have to keep forming, designing, shaping. Rooms, places, the city. Right here: the surroundings, the grounds, the house. The exhibitions and the movie program. The days on the meadow and the concert nights. We enjoy changing this city through cultural activity. An industrial space became a social one: ‘This space became a place’.

The building itself is a former engine shed of the harbor railway. We love its architecture, even though some characteristics are inconvenient for the culture industry.

Hafen 2 is an interim solution. It has been initiated by the city council in order to stimulate and upgrade the area culturally. Soon, this building will become an obstacle for urban development. It is written in the stars whether the project can be continued in another location in the harbor after the demolition. A new plot of land is being considered. A cost schedule and a construction plan for the new building already exist. But money seems to be lacking. We appreciate any concern and collaboration.

Hafen 2 ist eine wilde Mischung aus Ausstellungsraum, Streichelzoo, Konzertstätte, Café, Programmkino, Erholungswiese, Atelier und House-Klub. Oft noch mehr: Theater, Mode, Diskussionen, Lesungen. Es gibt keinen Begriff aus nur einem Wort, der es sinnvoll benennt. Der Einfachheit zuliebe nennen wir es „Kulturzentrum“. Wenn noch Zeit für eine weitere Titulierung ist: „Interdisziplinäre Plattform“.

Wir? Das ist der gemeinnützige Verein „suesswasser e.V – Kunst und Kultur im Hafen Offenbach“. Plus ein Netzwerk aus vielen assoziierten Kreativen.

Hafen 2 fördert progressive Kunst und Kultur. Sowohl Akteure als auch Rezipienten sollen aus ihr profitieren und Inspirationen mitnehmen, die soziale Fähigkeiten unterstützen, Kritikfähigkeit herausbilden, Selbstverwirklichung ermöglichen, Geschmacksbildung trainieren, zu Engagement animieren, Scheinbedürfnisse entlarven, zu modernen Lebensentwürfen ermutigen.

Warum machen wir es? Weil wir es lieben, zu gestalten. Das ist, was wir am besten können und am meisten wollen. Deswegen können wir gar nicht anders als gestalten, gestalten, gestalten. Räume, Orte, Stadt. Hier: die Umgebung, das Gelände, das Haus. Den Ausstellungsbetrieb und das Filmprogramm. Die Wiesentage und Konzertnächte. Das Gebäude ist ein ehemaliger Lokschuppen der Hafenbahn. Wir lieben seine Architektur, auch wenn manches für den Kulturbetrieb unpraktisch ist.

Hafen 2 ist eine Zwischennutzung. Sie wurde von der Stadt initiiert, um das Gebiet kulturell zu beleben und aufzuwerten. Bald ist das Gebäude der Stadtentwicklung im Weg. Ob das Projekt nach dem Abriss an einer anderen Stelle im Hafen weitergeführt werden kann, steht in den Sternen. Ein neues Grundstück wird in Betracht gezogen. Es gibt einen Kostenplan und Architektur-Entwurf für den Neubau. Doch das Geld scheint zu fehlen. Wir freuen uns über jedes Interesse und jedes Mitwirken.
